RINEKE DIJKSTRA

The top series of images shows a young man named Olivier before and during his enrolment in the French Foreign Legion, as her work shows a high interest in not only the effects of natural but also socially caused change.

The second image of a young women, shows two different sides of her identity, which is something that I find interesting, as everyone as several different sides to them and Dijkstra shows this with just a simple portrait.

So the Student Show at U of M was tonight.

And it was really good!

I didn’t submit anything to it, because I don’t know why I’m just dumb I guess, haha. I couldn’t take any pictures because it wasn’t really supposed to be allowed and it was WAY too crowded anyway, butttt if anyone reading this just happens to be in the Memphis area between now and March 10th, I would encourage them to check it out.

As an aside, there is still a really weird feeling about seeing your professors naked in photos and stuff.

Also went to David Lusk Gallery and looked at some of Frida Hamm’s work.

Can’t say I was a huge fan, but, uhhh, to each there own.

(If anyone would prefer posts like this be under read-mores, please tell me, I’ll gladly comply.)

Janine Antoni

Lick and Lather - Busts made of chocolate and soap, respectively licked and lathered by the artist.

Gnaw - Blocks of chocolate and lard sculpted by chewing, eating, and gnawing out pieces. The removed pieces of chocolate were used to make heart shaped boxes, while the pieces of lard were processed into lipstick.

Antoni says of Gnaw, “Rather than to describe the body, I decided to talk about the body by the residue it left on the object. And so to bring these two ideas together, and use my body as the tool […]chocolate seemed like the obvious choice. It seemed to embody desire for the viewer, and what happens if you succumb to that desire? You get fat.”

And for Lick and Lather, “this piece very much is about trying to be on the outside of myself and have a relationship with my image. So, the process is quite loving.”

This is my blog for my digital art class

We’re required to have it and to post certain things, so if it seems kind of weird at times that’s why.

Also I’m a complete digital noob, so a lot of it sucks. And I’ll post the better stuff here too. But, you know, feel free to take a look or whatever.

I’m starting to feel like I’m finally finding a rhythm as an artist. This semester, for the first time, my first projects for my classes have been things that I really feel like I can defend. And I know they can be improved, but because I’m comfortable with them already, I’m actually looking forward to critique, and looking at ways to make them better.

I think my Ceramics class really helped in that regard. I suppose I should make a photoset of my work from that class. But, I sort of discovered how to make work for the sake of working in that class. The pieces I was making were about texture and forms, and the interaction of objects. And now I’m trying to learn to combine that creativity for the sake of creativity with the emotion and the personality.

I guess I’m finally starting to have the attitude that I can do this.
